What Makes a Mini Split Efficient?

The efficiency of a mini split is measured by SEER and HSPF. The former tells the cooling efficiency and the latter tells the heating efficiency over a season (summer/winter). The higher the value of SEER and HSPF, the greater the efficiency.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Currently, mini splits are rated based on the second version of SEER which is the SEER2. In general, SEER2 is slightly lower than the previous SEER due to stricter test conditions.

HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. Similarly, the latest version is HSPF2. In addition, HSPF is further separated into region IV milder climates and region V for colder regions.

The efficiency ratings in this post is based on SEER2 and HSPF2-IV. They are cross-checked at AHRI directory to ensure the marketed values are tally with the certified values.

Here are the 9,000 BTU efficiency benchmarks for quick comparison:

  • Low efficiency: 16-19 SEER
  • Mid efficiency: 20-24 SEER
  • High efficiency: 25-33 SEER

Generally, high SEER rating mini splits are also high in HSPF rating. However, not all of them have equal “SEER-to-HSPF” ratio. Therefore, if you need a mini split primarily for heating, prioritize high HSPF models.

The higher the BTU, the lower the SEER and HSPF ratings. Hence, we need to compare the efficiency in the context of same BTU class, detailed below.

How to Choose an Efficient Mini Split

Choosing an efficient mini split requires data-driven decisions.

  • Size It Right: Match BTU to space: 20–30 BTU/sqft (e.g., 1,000 sqft = 20,000-30,000 BTU).
  • Focus on SEER & HSPF: Aim for SEER 20+ if you prioritize cooling and HSPF 10+ for heating focused.
  • Heating performance: Heating below minus 5°F fits cold climates.
  • DIY or Pro Install: DIY saves labor cost; pros cost more but offer longer warranty.
  • Set a Realistic Budget: High efficiency models are much more expensive.

Prioritize specs for your needs. For all-season uses, choose one with high SEER and HSPF.
