Competition is wild when it comes to window air conditioners. Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU is one of the top sellers on Amazon. So, what’s so special about this U-shaped window air conditioner?
At a glance, Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner has high energy efficiency rating and low operating noise with an aesthetically pleasing appearance at a competitive price. Furthermore, it has high customer satisfaction packed with advanced features.
Coincidentally, the outstanding performance is not just limited to the 8,000 BTU model but the entire U-Shaped series by the Chinese company, Midea. So, let’s dive into the analysis.
First of all, it looks great, much better looking than other window air conditioners, by far. Two things that it stands out the most; a) the front grille, and b) the curvy body design.
The Midea U-Shaped series has a front grille with small little tiny holes, unlike any other window air conditioners which have the typical horizontal-line grille with wide gaps. The design makes it look very modern and high-tech. The holes are very small and evenly spread across the entire front panel. I guess it won’t trigger Trypophobia?
The second thing about the Midea U-Shaped series is the curvy body design which separates it from the rest of the window air conditioners. Traditionally, window air conditioners are square-shaped like an old 1960s TV. Though some of the new window air conditioners are slightly curvy, nothing comes close to the Midea U-Shaped series.
Midea U-Shaped series window air conditioners come with a full set of window mounting brackets and accessories. So, you don’t have to buy them separately which means that the price that you pay, is a nett price.
Many of the bad reviews are about the packaging and customer service. Most of the customers complained that the packaging was badly done and the air conditioner is dented when arrive. Although it’s not fair to say this product itself is not good, the delivery experience got to improve.
Besides, some of the customers also complained about the absence of the user’s manual in the box. If you worry about it, one suggestion is you can contact the seller and give them a reminder or two and perhaps, pressure them so that they’ll pay more attention to your parcel.
The Biggest Difference: Extremely Quiet Operation
What sets the Midea U-Shaped series apart from other window air conditioners is the extremely quiet operation available at a competitive price. It has a sound level of 42 dB only when operating in low fan speed compared to other window air conditioners which averagely at about 52-54 dB.
Surprisingly, all three capacities; the 8,000 BTU, 10,000 BTU, and even 12,000 BTU have the same sound pressure level at low fan speed, but not at high fan speed.
Needless to say, quiet operation is critical especially when you use it for the bedroom. The closest competitor is the TOSOT Tranquility (GJC08BU) which has the same sound level of 42 dB when operating in low fan speed. However, it is not as efficient as the Midea U-Shaped series (more about efficiency later). Besides, only the 8,000 BTU from TOSOT is a low-noise model.
Another strong competitor is the Frigidaire Gallery series (GHWQ). However, the review on it is not much and generally lower as of writing. How come?
By the way, three of them look similar in terms of the front panel and overall body design. I know Chinese brands get a bad rep of being a copycat but, I’m not so sure about this one. No comment.
Outstanding Energy Efficiency
An energy efficiency rating at 15 CEER is not something that you normally see in a window air conditioner. Typically, the energy efficiency of a window air conditioner is somewhere between 11.8 and 12.1 CEER. Having an energy efficiency rating at 15 CEER, the Midea U-Shaped series window air conditioners blow other window air conditioners out of the window.
|CEER||Est. Annual |
|8,000 BTU||Energy Star||Rated in |
|$ 65||66% more|
|8,000 BTU||AHAM||15.0||$ 39||Baseline|
|8,000 BTU||Energy Star||12.0||$ 65||66% more|
|8,000 BTU||Energy Star||11.4||$ 69||76% more|
Based on the estimated annual operating cost, both the TOSOT Tranquility 8,000 BTU and Frigidaire 8,000 BTU operate at a cost of 66% more than the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner. Moreover, the number one ranking brand, GE, on Amazon’s best sellers (as of writing) is 76% more costly to operate than the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU.
The Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner beats some of the best names in the industry by a significant percentage when it comes to operating cost which brings us to the next comparison that is the purchase price.
High Purchase Price but Excellent Return on Investment
The Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner is selling at $359.00 on Amazon without considering any discount as of writing. It is definitely on the high-side for an 8,000 BTU window air conditioner.
On average, the purchase price of an 8,000 BTU window air conditioner is about $300.00 with the estimated annual operating cost at $65. The Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU is about 16% or $50 more expensive than most window air conditioners. However, if you use the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner, you’ll break even in just two years.
Window air conditioners that are cheaper than the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU averagely operate at a sound pressure level of 55 dB with one exception, that is the TOSOT Tranquility 8,000 BTU which also operate at a sound level on par with the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU at only 42 dB. This makes the TOSOT Tranquility standing side by side with the Midea U-Shaped for the 8,000 BTU window air conditioner.
Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU vs TOSOT Tranquility 8,000 BTU
Both the Midea U-Shaped and the TOSOT Tranquility are extremely quiet. When it comes to the purchase price, both also standing against each other. Hence, it is worth comparing both of them side by side to pick the champion for the 8,000 BTU window air conditioner.
|Comparison||Midea U-Shaped||TOSOT Tranquility|
|Capacity||8,000 BTU||8,000 BTU|
|Purchase Price||3% cheaper||Baseline|
|Operating Cost||60% cheaper||Baseline|
|Noise Level||42 dB||42 dB|
|Net Weight||14.5% lighter||Baseline|
|Window Requirement||22″-36″ @ 13.75″ Height||26″-41″ @ 19″ Height|
From the above comparison, the Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner looks like a better deal to me. Of course, it is. Otherwise, I wouldn’t showcase it on my recommendation page.
Not only the Midea U-Shaped is cheaper to operate than the TOSOT Tranquility, it beats the TOSOT Tranquility hard with high-tech features such as mobile control and voice control. Furthermore, it is lighter to handle and it has a more gentle requirement on the window size.
The winner is clear. The Midea U-Shaped 8,000 BTU window air conditioner stands out with its modern front grille and curvy body design. Its extremely quiet yet efficient operation makes it unbeatable.
Although it is priced higher than the market average, its performance and features pull it up to the top positions on Amazon’s best sellers, standing against some of the most recognizable competitors with high customer ratings.
