If you have a 1,000 sq ft room or house, you might be thinking of using a mini split for heating and cooling. But, how many BTU do you need for a 1,000 sq ft mini split?

Generally, a 24,000 BTU mini split is able to handle 1,000 sq ft depending on the cooling load. If the cooling load is high, a mini split with more BTUs may be required and vice versa.

A 1,000 sq ft space can be used for various applications and different applications require different BTUs of mini splits. Understanding the sizing of mini splits will give you a better idea.

As the name suggests, mini splits are mini air conditioners. They are usually used to cool small rooms. So, can a mini split cool 1,000 sq ft?

The answer is a mini split can cool 1,000 sq ft. A single unit of 24,000 BTU mini split is able to handle a 1000 sq ft space adequately. However, if there is a lot of heat in the space, more mini splits may be required.

It is generally recommended to use a 24,000 BTU mini split to cool a 1,000 sq ft space. Depending on what the 1,000 sq ft space is, a bigger mini split may be needed.

For example, if you have a 1,000 sq ft bedroom, a 24,000 BTU mini split is enough. But, if it is a 1,000 sq ft garage, you’ll need two 18,000 BTU mini splits because the cooling load is higher. Furthermore, if you have a 1000 sq ft house, you may need three to four 9,000 BTU mini splits, one in each room.

Mini splits come in several sizes. Using the correct mini split size is crucial. So, how big of a mini split do you need for 1,000 sq ft?

Generally, you need a 24,000 BTU mini split for 1,000 sq ft based on a rule of thumb of 20-30 BTU per square foot. The size of a mini split can vary depending on the space cooling load.

Sizing a mini split is not just based on the rule of thumb. We need to consider what’s in the room and how much heat is present in the room, and here’s how.

The rule of thumb of 20-30 BTU per square foot is meant for typical applications such as bedrooms, living rooms and study rooms in typical weather conditions. For other applications, you need to either increase or decrease the BTU of the mini split. And, if you’re living in the southern region, you’ll need to increase the BTU as well.

By the way, if you want to learn more about mini split especially how to design it for your house, consider my Mini Split (eBook).
